Watching Jacob
Transferring baby Jacob from warm hands to a barren crib can be a tricky task sometimes. Typically there’s a brief crying stint that acknowledges the cold feeling he gets when he’s in the crib, away from Mommy’s arms. And it’s those fleeting moments of time when I think I can conquer all my email and have time to play a few games of Spider Solitaire. Today I opted to write on the blog; it’s been a few months.
Watching Jacob brings me tremendous joy. Bart, too. We enjoy sitting him up on one of his homemade blankets and putting toys in front of him. His favorite right now is this Fisher Price classic toy: a yellow plastic post on a white base that houses five colored plastic circles that stack on top of each other. I actually had the toy when I was young. The only difference is that the red circle/donut has one side clear with three little balls inside it that roll around making a nice noise. Jacob pushes the toy tower over and grabs each ring. He can get all the circles off and respectively chew on whichever color he favors most. He even likes to chew on the base. I’m waiting for the day he puts the circles back on the post. And it’s as simple as that. Bart and I just watch him. It brings us joy and excitement.
Then I read to him. He now grabs at the pages and seems to know that I will turn the page and new pictures and words will appear. I’ve been reading to him since birth, at least one book a day. I’d tell you his favorite book but I really mean my favorite book because I gravitate towards the ones that are simple and fun for him. One is the classic Dr. Seuss The Foot Book and another he likes is Little Puppy which has a finger puppet dog in the book. Oh, and I can’t forget the fire truck book with wheels that already had to be replaced because Jacob chewed the binding off. He also likes Hello Bee, Hello Me and Who Loves Baby?, which are both plastic books that he can nibble on.
People ask me what I do all day. I watch Jacob. I care for him exclusively by playing with him, feeding him, reading to him and taking him out into the world.
This past weekend he went to his first Yankees game. We had a ball. When the three of us are together riding the subway and getting around NYC is easy. When Bart’s at work Jacob and I roam the Upper West Side streets. We frequent Albee Baby and Central Park. Jacob goes on the swings and in the sandbox. I also take him to my workout in the park, Stroller Mamas. Yes, I’m one of those ladies that kicks my legs out behind the stroller. I love it. Jacob doesn’t mind the entertainment either.
Now that we near June I am beginning my nanny search. The thought of leaving Jacob with someone else sometimes troubles me but the reality of returning to work looms closer. Today I’m excited about returning to work; I know it will be good for me. But there are days when I can’t fathom leaving Jacob and I expect I’ll have a challenging transition when the time comes.
I’ll continue to treasure watching Jacob.
