Small treasures
Today Barney Greengrass, a classic restaurant on the Upper West Side, celebrated 100 years of business. To celebrate they offered the original menu with the original prices. I lined up with some other New Yorkers for a delectable treat for a small fee. My lunch cost $2.45 and I ate some fine Nova on an everything bagel with cream cheese, onion and tomato. I also had a fresh squeezed orange juice and a coke, too. Jacob and I only waited twenty minutes which is very little time for such a steal.
Jacob just turned seven months this week and still everyday is amazing with him. One of my favorite treats is taking a nap with Jacob in my bed. He snuggles right up to me and sleeps extremely well. I understand why parents would want to keep the little ones in their bed. However, I don't do it often because it spoils him. We don’t want Jacob in our bed all the time. We actually started what's called "sleep training," the practice of making sure our baby sleeps through the night. But every once and a while taking a nap with Jacob is truly special.
One thing that I’ve been doing since the end of January is “Stroller Mamas.” I meet Brian, an aspiring actor and practicing personal trainer, in Central Park about twice a week. He only charges ten dollars and that still amazes me. Some sessions there are twenty-five moms and other times it’s just me. Today was one of those days where Brian ran the session for just me. Jacob chills out in the jogging stroller and Brian coaches me through a fairly rigorous workout that includes: stairs, running, skipping, jumping and dips and push-ups. Truthfully I wouldn’t know what to do without this class. Usually I chit chat with other mothers, but more often than not I focus on getting fit and working as hard as I can.
When I think about this time that I have to take care of Jacob and myself I am most grateful for the small treasures that happen almost every day. “You can never get this time back,” many people told me about staying home to raise the baby. It’s true. I am grateful I can stay home to mother my son and find joy in each day’s adventure.
